Our school

Gympie Special School is located in the historical town of Gympie. The school plays an important role in the North Coast Region by providing a quality educational program for students aged from Prep to Year 12 who require an individualised program to meet their specific learning needs. A diagnosis of intellectual disability is a requirement for enrolment in a state special school. The enrolment is managed through a formal Education Queensland process. More information is available under the enrolments tab.

The school is divided into four sectors: Junior Primary, Senior Primary, Junior Secondary, and Senior Secondary. Each sector has an emphasis on implementing age appropriate learning opportunities founded on the Australian Curriculum and in Senior Secondary we specifically cater for senior students through Queensland Studies Authority/QCIA processes. Learning takes place within a variety of teaching contexts, including learning opportunities within the local community.
At Gympie Special School we aim to develop and promote each child's potential and level of independence through learning programs developed in response to individual needs and learning styles. Each student will have an Individual Curriculum Plan or QCIA plan along with a Personal Development Plan which maps their personal learning journey and the targeted supports required to ensure access to the broad range of programs offered. Supports may include the use of targeted strategies such as Augmented and Alternate Communication (AAC) systems, therapy activities, individualised behaviour planning, or the use of adaptive technology.
